Weekend video jam: Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008)

The great jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard passed away this week at the age of 70. I found this video of a classic solo by Hubbard — and he was famous for them — during a televised rendition of Art Blakey’s “Moanin.” In the 1950s Hubbard was a member of Blakey’s legendary “Jazz Messengers,” with the bandmaster here hitting the drums. Enjoy and I’ll return to this blog on Monday with my set of aspirations (I refuse to call them goals!) for journalists and their craft in 2009.
