A blueswoman remembered: Odetta (1930-2008)

I want to start a little departure here before signing off at the end of the week. It may be a video or audio clip or some other multimedia element that strikes my fancy, something completely different than the turbulent world of journalism that I write about during the week. Something to chase away the blues we sometimes feel as we move forward in our careers, and our lives.

Feel free to suggest things you’d like me to highlight here. I’ll be glad to take requests.

One of the great inspirations of the civil rights movement died this week. Here’s a video remembrance of Odetta, and her rendition of “The Midnight Special” that Leadbelly wrote and first made famous. Hers is pretty special too:
